Statement From Chancellor Gary S. May on Encampment Set Up May 6 (UC Davis Website)

Note: I have now been to the encampment multiple times.  Never have I seen a bigger group of obnoxious cowards who call themselves protestors.  They are all hiding behind fences, masks, and umbrellas.  Several of them committed assaults on me and at least two committed batteries on me.  By taking photos, I have been accused of putting these people's well-being in jeopardy because the school (UC Davis) or some other entity is out to get them--they allege.

My answer is simple: 1) Assumption of risk.  If you are not willing to accept the risks of protesting, do not protest.  2) UC Davis is a public place and the courts have consistently ruled that there is no expectation of privacy in public.  And, 3) The First Amendment Rights of protestors do not negate or supersede my First Amendment Rights.
